### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I prepared to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and reserved, the idea of entering this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an entire academic year characterized by development, hurdles, and memorable experiences, I can clearly see how much it has changed me. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my position now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting facets of entering university was the fear of meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as a major concern. I must admit, during my first day in student housing, I stayed cooped up in my room, avoiding any interaction out of nervousness. Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to share that I have built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The moment of change arrived when I encouraged myself to engage in light conversation with others who were similarly situated. That straightforward action of reaching out fostered the development of a second family here at Imperial. My most significant takeaway? Take risks early on. Even if you’re uncertain, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. And remember, the best approach is simply to be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.

#### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was prominent, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more drastic. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capability when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re staying on track.

What proved most beneficial was acknowledging that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something confuses you, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This became the most vital lesson I learned throughout my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

#### Forming Relationships with Faculty

On the topic of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open regarding our concerns, which was incredibly comforting.

I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling decisions I made. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, proving to be immensely valuable. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the most beneficial steps you can take. My recommendation? Utilize the support systems available to the fullest—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Insights Gained

Looking back on the year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensions I had—both pre-university and during it—were baseless. With the backing of faculty and peers, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle academic demands such as exams and deadlines while also savoring the social and personal aspects of university life.

This year has been a path of self-discovery, development, and resilience. If you’re on the verge of starting your own university journey, remember that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Embrace the challenges, tap into the resources around you, and above all, stay true to yourself.
