**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt like a leap into the unknown. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge
A particularly daunting aspect of commencing university was the quest for companionship. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share that concern. On my first day at student accommodation, just days prior to the semester, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. My friends here have turned into a second family, all initiated through casual conversations and shared experiences. What did I discover? Taking that first step into the unknown is invariably rewarding. If you’re not ready to jump right in, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at university, you’re likely to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the demands and complexities of university-level coursework presented another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and moving from the first term to the second term felt especially tough. It’s simple to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to have it all set.
What aided me through this phase was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are experiencing the same. The essential element is to reach out for assistance—be it from peers or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most significant lesson I gleaned from my first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our issues and offering guidance.
While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. One of my best choices was to venture out of my comfort zone and become a year well-being representative. This opportunity helped me forge relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through official roles or informal exchanges, connecting with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My main takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support available—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has enlightened me on how to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I contemplate the last ten months, I take pride in the distance I’ve traveled. From a shy fresher hiding in my room to someone who has formed enduring friendships, embraced challenges, and evolved both academically and personally, this year has been life-changing.
If you’re about to commence your own university journey, remember: take that leap of faith, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do this!
