**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. As a first-year student preparing to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, I was entering uncharted waters. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, this felt akin to plunging into the deep end. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can contemplate what I’ve absorbed and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is a major concern for many new students, and I certainly felt the same. On my first day in the student accommodation, just a few days before the term started, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, far too anxious to step outside and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve developed some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—both within my program and across the wider university. It began with simple steps, such as initiating conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what did I come to understand? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is undeniably rewarding. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous icebreakers and events exist specifically to assist you in connecting with your peers. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. Given the diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major challenge was getting used to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to become daunted or second-guess your capabilities when observing others study and succeed.
What aided me during these times was the comforting reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If there’s something you’re struggling with, it’s highly likely that others are too. The greatest lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of reaching out for help. Whether from classmates or faculty, seeking assistance is vital.
### Support from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, I must highlight just how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They truly care about students’ success and empathize with the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our concerns and offering valuable guidance.
Although I waited until the end of the year to fully leverage the pastoral support available, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me foster connections with faculty members. This experience proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My most important takeaway? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights from My First Year
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was largely exaggerated. Countless resources and support mechanisms are at your disposal, whether through staff or fellow students, to guide you through challenges.
Ultimately, I’ve come to realize that I’m never on my own. Even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve managed to find ways to enjoy myself and maximize my university experience.
To anyone about to start their own university adventure: take that leap, face the difficulties head-on, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ll develop more than you ever imagined possible.
