**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can appreciate how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may also be a top worry for you. On my first day in student accommodations, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have blossomed into a second family for me at Imperial. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I learn? Taking that pivotal step to connect with those around you is always rewarding. If you’re not ready to do so immediately, don’t stress—there will be abundant opportunities and social events to meet others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’ll surely find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adjusting to the academic demands and complexities was yet another challenge I faced. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your abilities when you see peers studying fervently and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me in navigating those moments of insecurity was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find a concept challenging, it’s likely that others do too. The vital thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

The faculty in the Materials department have been remarkably supportive. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they facilitated open communication and offered continuous support.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not engaging with it sooner. Embarking on the role of a year well-being representative was one step I took early on. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience.

My greatest insight? Utilize the support systems at your disposal. Whether it’s academic assistance or mentoring care, you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even as the year progressed—was largely misplaced. With a wide array of support available from both academic staff and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of pleasure and amusement.

Reflecting on my journey, I acknowledge my growth, and I look forward to whatever comes next. If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, understand that feeling anxious is perfectly normal. Take those risks, embrace the obstacles, and remember that help is always within reach.
