**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase was quite terrifying. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, numerous obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what precisely has this year imparted to me, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student exploring this, it’s likely one of the aspects you’re most apprehensive about. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s official start. I spent that entire day cloistered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I could have wished for. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, particularly among my course mates. It only required a touch of casual conversation with others who felt just as anxious as I did.
So, what did I grasp? The essential step is to make that first move. Even if you don’t believe you’re prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to socialize. Most crucially, just remain true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests and principles.
### Managing the Academic Load
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and the leap from the first term to the second was even sharper. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and seemingly grasping everything effortlessly.
What aided me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If a concept eludes you, there’s a good chance that others are facing the same difficulties. The most vital lesson I gained during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from peers or faculty. Do not hesitate to ask for support when you find yourself in a bind.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Regarding faculty support, the assistance within the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want you to excel, and they acknowledge the obstacles students often encounter. They are consistently open to dialogue and proactive in addressing student issues. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I decided to step up by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me with the chance to connect more with the staff, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your well-being. My recommendation? Make the most of the support that’s accessible to you. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehensions I held before embarking on my university journey—and even during the year—were largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, you’re never genuinely alone. I’ve acquired the ability to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying the university experience.
