**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and reserved, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Challenge of Making Friends

One of the most daunting aspects of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be anxious about the same issue. On my very first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I’m thrilled to say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.

How did this transformation occur? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings. My main takeaway? Take a chance early on. Even if you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Workload

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework was pronounced, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to question your abilities when you notice others studying diligently and feel like you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in managing this? First, I reminded myself that everyone was encountering similar obstacles. If I struggled with a concept, chances were high that others were feeling the same frustration. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to request support is perhaps the most vital skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Supportive Staff

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and were always ready to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems provided—you can never have too much help!

### Key Takeaways

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even during the year—was frequently unfounded. There are countless resources and support networks available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve internalized that I’m never truly alone, and it’s feasible to manage stressors such as exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
