**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone like me, who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new chapter seemed overwhelming. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, challenges, and abundant enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve evolved and how much I’ve learned.
### Easing the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. For many, this can be one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of commencing university life—and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days ahead of the official term start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture outside and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships of my life. The people I’ve encountered here have become like a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive.
So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that making that initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There are myriad icebreaker events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, I learned to simply be myself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and the university, you’re sure to find fellow students who connect with you.
### Confronting Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. Being in such a demanding academic environment can sometimes shake your self-confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What helped me navigate those challenging moments was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were struggling too. The crux is to seek assistance. This might have been the most critical lesson I acquired during my first year. Whether reaching out to classmates or faculty, asking for help is vital.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of staff, I cannot stress enough how fantastic the Materials department is. The lecturers and personnel genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing support.
I didn’t utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s outset, I ventured into the role of year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and during the year—was often unwarranted. There’s a multitude of support available, whether from staff or peers, to help navigate any obstacles.
This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never genuinely alone, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. It has taught me how to balance the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun. Most significantly, it’s been a year of personal development, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead.
If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember to take that leap, ask for assistance, and embrace the experience. You’re capable of this!
