**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what have I learned this year, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the idea of meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your top worries as well. On the day I relocated to my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire time retreating to my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family.
How did I achieve this? It began with small actions, such as engaging in light conversations with others in similar situations. I learned that taking risks at the start of the year pays off significantly. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t be concerned—there are numerous icebreaker opportunities and chances to mingle with others. Most crucially, I discovered that authenticity is vital. With a diverse array of individuals at university, there’s a good chance you’ll find those who align with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Difficulties
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence wasn’t always straightforward, especially when I observed others studying and felt I was falling behind.
What helped me through those phases of uncertainty was recognizing that everyone else was experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that many of my peers were facing the same issue. The most vital lesson I came away with in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and recognize the obstacles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open and are consistently receptive to our inquiries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had sought them out sooner. Early on, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are multiple avenues to connect with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest insight? Fully utilize the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, from faculty and peers alike, to aid you in overcoming challenges. This year has taught me that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s entirely feasible to balance academic pressures with enjoyable moments.
As I look ahead, I feel thankful for the growth and experiences this year has offered me. To anyone gearing up to embark on their own university adventure, my message is straightforward: take the plunge, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’re capable of this!
