**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety while preparing to begin my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a first-year student, I was entering uncharted territory, far removed from the comfort of my previously shy and introverted nature. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Confronting the Challenge of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my initial day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.
What made the difference? It all began with simple conversations and connecting with those who were feeling similarly. I discovered that taking that initial leap of faith is essential. If you’re not ready to jump in right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is foundational for cultivating genuine connections. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Adjusting to the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was a stark transition, and the jump from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and flourishing.
What aided me in overcoming this was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best piece of advice I can share is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and provided guidance whenever we required assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had activated it sooner. Taking up the position of a well-being representative for the year was among the best choices I made. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty and gain valuable insights into the available support. Whether through formal roles or casual discussions, getting to know the faculty can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the help and resources available—you can never have too much support!
### Key Takeaways
As I look back on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even during the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support provided by faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone to reach out to. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and have figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and due dates.
This year has been a journey of personal growth, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. To anyone gearing up to embark on their university journey, know that feeling nervous is entirely natural—but also understand that you will evolve, adjust, and succeed in ways that may surprise you.
