**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt like a lot. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and happiness, I can truly appreciate how much I’ve progressed and what I’ve learned.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of meeting new individuals and cultivating friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your chief worries. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, as I stand here, I can assure you that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. These friends have morphed into a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. What changed? It all commenced with small efforts—striking up light conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

The greatest takeaway for me was to jump in with both feet early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a rich and varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Facing Academic Hurdles

Adjusting to the academic pressures of university was yet another major obstacle. Transitioning from A-levels to university coursework represented a steep learning curve, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more notable. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe others appearing to thrive.

What aided me in overcoming these difficulties was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a particular topic, it’s likely others are as well. The crucial thing is to seek help—whether through peers or academic staff. Learning to ask for assistance is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

A standout aspect of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They truly want students to thrive and show genuine understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the outset of the year, I stepped up by becoming a Year Well-Being Representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Fully leverage the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even during the course of the year—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve discovered how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and personal growth.

Starting university is a leap into the unfamiliar, but it’s equally an exceptional opportunity for growth, connection, and self-betterment. If you’re about to begin your own adventure, welcome the challenges, utilize the support surrounding you, and remember to enjoy the journey.
