**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a generally shy and introverted individual, plunging into this new phase felt far beyond my comfort level. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this adventure, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Connections

A major challenge I faced was the quest to make friends. For numerous incoming students, this represents one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and I was certainly no exception. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the full day secluded in my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become akin to a second family for me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort threshold and initiating brief dialogues with those who were equally apprehensive.

What did I take away from this experience? The essential lesson is to take a chance at the onset of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re destined to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another notable hurdle was adapting to the demands of the workload and the complexity of the academic material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the subsequent term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.

What aided me during these tougher times was the acknowledgment that everyone else is grappling with similar issues. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. The best advice I can offer is to ask for assistance. This has been perhaps the most crucial lesson I’ve gathered in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for help from fellow students or faculty members.

### The Significance of Staff Support

On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. They maintain an open line of communication with students throughout the academic year and consistently offer assistance.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until near the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and fostering these relationships can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—you can never receive too much aid!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before and during my time at university was frequently unwarranted. With a wealth of support from staff and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to strike a balance between the pressures of examinations and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

In conclusion, my initial year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It’s been an adventure of personal development, education, and forming enduring relationships. To anyone on the brink of starting their own university path: take the plunge, seek support, and relish the journey.
