**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nervous excitement, uncertainty, and self-criticism as I readied myself for my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging into this new venture felt intimidating for someone who had always been somewhat introverted. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, difficulties, and unforgettable experiences, I can assert confidently that it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely one of your concerns as well. I recall my first day in student accommodation, where I found myself secluding in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the most genuine friendships I’ve ever experienced. These individuals have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. The crux of it was taking that initial leap—striking up small conversations with fellow students who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did I take away from this experience? Firstly, it’s beneficial to step outside your comfort zone early on. Even if you don’t feel ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and avenues to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is to be your true self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are likely to encounter people who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was yet another considerable obstacle. The jump from A-levels to university-level coursework was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even tougher. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and doubt my abilities, especially when comparing myself to my peers.
What aided me through this challenging phase was recognizing that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was tackling the same difficulties, and if there was something I struggled to grasp, it was probable others were too. The most crucial lesson I gleaned from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it involves reaching out to classmates or asking for guidance from staff members, there’s no shame in acknowledging your need for support.
### The Significance of Caring Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year, ensuring that students feel supported.
Although I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support options available until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the role of a wellbeing representative for my year was one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to establish connections with staff, which proved incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, getting to know the staff is among the wisest decisions you can make. My main takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support systems available to you—there’s never too much help!
### Key Takeaways
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were misplaced. With the broad spectrum of supportive resources available, from staff to fellow students, there’s always someone to reach out to. This year has shown me that I’m not truly alone and that it’s feasible to balance academic demands with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I continue on this journey, I’m eager to keep growing, learning, and maximizing my time at Imperial. To any prospective students reading this: take that leap, confront the challenges, and believe that you will find your niche.
