### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was quite daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodations, just days before classes were set to start, I spent my entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who seem like an extended family.
What was the turning point? It all began with brief conversations. I came to understand that many were in the same situation, feeling as anxious as I did. Taking that initial step to engage with others made a world of difference. And if you’re not prepared to dive in straight away, worry not—there are countless ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. The crucial takeaway? Be authentic. With the diverse community at Imperial, you’re certain to find others who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
#### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another key hurdle was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-level studies to university academics was stark, and the move from the first term to the second proved even more challenging. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or second-guess your capabilities when you see others seemingly thriving in their studies.
What assisted me during this period was the recognition that I was not alone. If I found myself confused by something, it was likely that several others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or faculty. Everyone is there for your benefit, and asking for assistance is a demonstration of strength, not a weakness.
#### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly wish for students to flourish and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not having taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I made the bold move to become a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with faculty members. This experience turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My suggestion? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.
#### Insights Gained
As I ponder this past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during my university experience—were unwarranted. With the extensive array of support from faculty and peers, there’s always someone ready to lend a hand. This year has demonstrated to me that I am never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible, even amid the demands of examinations and deadlines.
As I look to the future, I feel more self-assured and eager for what lies ahead. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, keep in mind: take that leap, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance, and above all, be genuine.
