**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown appeared daunting. Now, looking back on this past academic year, I recognize it as a transformative time filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can be intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s probably something that concerns you, too. On my initial day in student housing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. These relationships have evolved into my second family here at Imperial, and they all began with modest steps—such as initiating conversations with individuals who were equally new and uncertain as I was.
What did I discover? Taking that first leap to reach out to others is valuable. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet individuals. And most importantly, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to find others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the demands and intricacies of the course material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university studies was a distinct leap, and the shift from the first term to the second term seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by peers who excel.
What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone shares a similar experience. If you’re grappling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The essential lesson I learned this year is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This is perhaps the most vital insight I gained during my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for support.
### The Encouraging Staff in Materials
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained clear communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources available to me until the year’s end, and I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which proved to be immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My takeaway? Utilize the support networks available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on this year, I’ve come to appreciate that the anxiety I felt before beginning university, and even throughout the year, was often unfounded. There are countless resources and individuals eager to help you, from staff to fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to enjoy university life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a journey of development, and I’m eager to see what the next chapter will bring.
