**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, venturing into uncharted territory was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may very well relate—it’s a common concern when entering university. On my initial day in student accommodation, just prior to the term kicking off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to go out and meet new people.
Fast forward to the present, and I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends imaginable. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. All it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally new to this journey.
What did I glean from this experience? Taking that initial leap of faith at the year’s beginning is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreakers and activities designed to facilitate connections. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adjusting to the academic demands and the complexity of university coursework was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your abilities, especially when observing others seemingly coping well.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are, too. The key is to reach out for assistance—this might be the most crucial lesson I acquired during my initial year. Whether it’s connecting with your peers or seeking help from faculty, don’t hesitate to seek support.
### Exceptional Staff and Support Systems
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is genuinely outstanding. The lecturers and tutors sincerely care about student success and are mindful of the obstacles we face. Throughout the academic year, they engaged with us consistently, addressing our concerns and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate meaningful relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely valuable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, forming connections with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself.
What’s my biggest realization? Utilize the resources and assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as excessive support.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during my time at university—were unfounded. With the vast array of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and camaraderie.
As I progress forward, I hold gratitude for the personal development I’ve undergone and the friendships I’ve fostered. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, face the challenges head-on, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ll be surprised by what you can accomplish.
