**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown was a significant departure from what felt safe. Reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a journey of development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

### Facing the Challenge of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you’re likely experiencing similar concerns. On my first day settling into university housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room. The idea of venturing out and introducing myself was daunting.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of my closest friends. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who resonate with my experiences and provide support. All it required was for me to step beyond my comfort zone and initiate small talks with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what has this taught me? I discovered that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not ready or don’t feel at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned to simply be myself. Given the diverse range of people in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the course load and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re putting in enough effort.

What aided me during these periods was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re puzzled by something, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely want you to achieve success and are aware of the obstacles students face. They are approachable, understanding, and maintain open lines of communication with students throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can profoundly impact your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both before commencing university and during my first term—was largely misplaced. There’s an abundance of support available, from staff to fellow students, and you are never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve evolved, and I’m eager for what the future holds. To anyone preparing to embark on a similar journey: take the leap, embrace the challenges, and remember to enjoy the journey.
