**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was preparing to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Immersing myself in such a situation was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the first and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was the prospect of making new friends. This is frequently one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, you may have similar concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had here at Imperial, especially within my field of study. I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a little small talk with others who were feeling just as I did. So, what has this taught me? I found that it’s always wise to take that leap at the outset of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, rest assured! There will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that if you choose to be anything, be true to yourself. Among the diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Pressure
Another major challenge was adapting to the volume and complexity of the workload. There was indeed a distinct transition from A-levels, and an even more substantial shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence—you might observe others studying and feel inadequate.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be one of the most vital lessons to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates or instructors!
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely desire to see you succeed and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year to resolve any concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and I regret not having done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish a better rapport with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to take full advantage of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Final Reflections
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt leading up to and during university was often misplaced. With the extensive array of support options from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings of unease can certainly be mitigated. I’ve realized that I’m never solitary in this journey, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun alongside the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
