**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt a whirlwind of nerves, fears, and uncertainties about the road ahead. I was preparing to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been on the quieter side, taking the plunge into the unfamiliar was not straightforward for me. However, as I look back on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and enjoyable moments, I can assert with confidence that it has been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gathered, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was building friendships. For many new students, this is a major concern at the university’s outset, and I was no different. On my first day at the student residence, just prior to the semester starting, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today; I am thrilled to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The shift occurred when I encouraged myself to engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. It wasn’t instantaneous, but gradually, I discovered a second family within Imperial. What did I learn? Taking that brave first step is essential. Even if you’re initially hesitant or uneasy, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the demands and intricacies of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What aided me in managing this was understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If a concept eludes you, there’s a good chance others are finding it difficult too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. This might be the crucial skill to hone during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help; collaboration and support are priceless.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional backing from the Materials Science faculty. They are genuinely invested in student success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication regarding any concerns, which was immensely beneficial.

While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing it sooner. Early on, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, enabling me to forge connections with faculty members. This was an invaluable experience, and I highly encourage seeking ways to engage with your professors and tutors. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that my anxious feelings—both pre-university and during my studies—were often unfounded. With abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has shown me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and connection.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal growth, resilience, and exploration. If you are about to embark on a similar adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take those leaps of faith, seek help, and embrace the opportunities around you—you might just surprise yourself.
