**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and insecurity regarding the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, jumping into this new phase felt intimidating. Now that I reflect back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and amazing moments of happiness. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student examining this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my initial day in the student dormitory, a few days before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the whole day inside my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently proclaim that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The breakthrough came when I made the decision to take gradual steps—initiating simple conversations with individuals who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these connections evolved into a second family at Imperial. My most significant takeaway? Take a risk early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the scholarly expectations of university was another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second posed an even steeper learning curve. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when witnessing others seemingly excelling.
What aided me the most was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re finding it tough to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. This possibly stands out as the most important lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Establishing Rapport with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to flourish and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing direction.
I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support available until the tail end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was a leap of faith for me, but it ultimately became one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through official roles or casual encounters, getting to know the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and support networks accessible to you—you can never receive too much help.
### Valuable Takeaways
As I ponder this year, I recognize that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely baseless. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This journey has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
To anyone on the brink of beginning their university adventure: embrace the hurdles, take those leaps of faith, and remember that assistance is always available.
