**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a transformative life change felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and ample happiness, I can truly appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the idea of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a top concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and say hello. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to take a small risk and start light conversations with others who shared my experiences. Those early interactions flourished into friendships that feel like a second family here at Imperial. My most critical lesson? Take that risk early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared immediately, don’t stress—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests and values.
### Facing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level coursework was yet another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What supported me through this was realizing that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re grappling with a topic, it’s likely others are as well. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill you can hone in your first year.
### Support from the Materials Department
When discussing help, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered continuous support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not having done so earlier. Early on, I committed to becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster connections with faculty members. Building relationships with the staff has been invaluable, and there are many ways to achieve this—be it through academic positions, office hours, or events. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available. You can never obtain too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has taught me that the trepidation I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive support from staff and peers, I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve realized how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.
Reflecting on my experiences, I see a year rich in personal growth, new friendships, and important lessons. For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, understand that while the hurdles may appear intimidating, they also represent opportunities for development. Take those calculated risks, seek support, and embrace the journey—you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
