**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been shy and introverted, leaping into the unknown was intimidating. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So what have I taken away from all this, and where do I stand today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely that this is a concern for you as well. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment? Mustering the courage to engage in brief conversations with peers who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with simple gestures of outreach. My suggestion? Take that courageous step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Facing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and complexities was another substantial obstacle. The shift from A-level studies to university life was a clear leap, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more profound. It’s common to feel inundated or doubt your skills, particularly when witnessing others seemingly juggle everything effortlessly.
What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I acquired during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They earnestly wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took early on. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My lesson? Leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the broad array of support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has imparted the knowledge of how to manage pressure from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
If you’re about to embark on your university journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. But also recognize that you’re entering a space where you will grow, learn, and discover your niche. Take those bold steps, welcome the challenges, and seize the opportunities that await you.
