**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the unknown was not an experience I was familiar with. However, reflecting now, I recognize how much I’ve evolved throughout the past academic year—a time filled with personal growth, obstacles, and loads of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely one of the concerns on your mind as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, mere days before classes commenced, I spent all day ensconced in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. All it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with peers who were just as anxious as I was.
What have I learned? Taking that initial leap at the year’s start is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable immediately, no need for concern—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse community at university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more daunting. It wasn’t always easy to maintain confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling like I was lagging behind.
What aided me during this time was realizing that everyone shared the same experience. If I didn’t grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others were grappling with it as well. The key lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out makes a substantial difference.
### The Encouraging Staff
On the subject of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the concluding stages of the year, which I regret not doing sooner. In the early days, I did take a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me establish connections with staff members. This was invaluable, and I would recommend anyone to seize opportunities to familiarize themselves with the staff. They are there to support you, and you can never have excessive assistance.
### Main Takeaways
In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, from staff to fellow students, and you’re never truly isolated. I’ve learned to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside times of joy and enjoyment.
To summarize, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a life-changing experience. It has highlighted the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, asking for assistance, and embracing the opportunities presented to me. If you’re about to begin your own university journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive—but also recognize that you have the ability to excel.
