**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresh first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a major life alteration was intimidating. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was befriending others. The transition to university can be daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day of moving into my residence—just days before classes commenced—I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and meet new people.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and through my course, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with casual conversations and finding common ground with those who were experiencing similar situations.

So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or comfortable, rest assured—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is vital. With such a varied community at the university, you are sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another significant obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more intense. Being in such a challenging academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence—you might observe others studying and begin to doubt your abilities.

What aided me in overcoming this was the reminder that others share similar experiences. If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others feel the same way. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for guidance is essential.

### Encouragement from Faculty

On the topic of staff, the support from the Materials department has been outstanding. The faculty are genuinely invested in student success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. They maintain accessible communication with us throughout the year, addressing any concerns we may have.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had acted sooner. Accepting the position of a year well-being representative at the year’s beginning was one of the bold steps I took. This role allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial.

There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to capitalize on the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have an excess of support!

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There is a wealth of support available, whether from faculty or fellow students, to help you overcome any challenges.

This year has demonstrated to me that I am never genuinely alone and that it is possible to derive joy even amidst the pressures of examinations and deadlines. It has been a year of growth, education, and unforgettable moments, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
