**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted, venturing into the unknown felt challenging. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern when starting university, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to step out and meet anyone.
Flash forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here—within my course and throughout the university—have become like a second family. It all began with small actions, like starting friendly conversations with others who were equally nervous and new.
What did I gain from this experience? First, it’s essential to take those early leaps of faith. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be various icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Second, the key is to embrace your true self. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you will surely encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Difficulties
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was marked, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence wasn’t always straightforward, especially when witnessing others engage in studying while feeling behind.
What aided me during these times was the acknowledgment that everyone else was experiencing similar struggles. If I was unclear about a concept, likely, others were grappling with it too. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most crucial skills you can hone in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. Their genuine desire for student success and understanding of our challenges has been evident. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until late in the year, I regret not taking advantage of them sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the beginning of the year, which proved to be fulfilling. It enabled me to establish connections with staff members, a benefit I deeply appreciate. Whether through formal roles or informal dialogues, connecting with the staff is invaluable. My lesson? Utilize the resources and support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I faced—both before university began and throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With a broad spectrum of support systems from staff and fellow students, I realized I was not truly alone. Most crucially, I learned how to balance the demands of exams and responsibilities with moments of enjoyment and happiness.
Embarking on university is a significant milestone, and feeling apprehensive is completely normal. However, with the right attitude and an openness to seek out assistance, it can also turn out to be one of the most gratifying experiences of your life.
