**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into this new phase was quite intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that has been transformative—marked by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might be one of your top concerns as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
How did I achieve this? It began with baby steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were feeling similarly. I learned that taking risks early on is essential. Even if you initially feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to connect with others who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university life was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s common to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when seeing others study and suspecting you may not measure up.
What assisted me through this was realizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re finding a concept hard to grasp, odds are others are too. My best advice is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Learning to request help is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication regarding any challenges we might have been facing.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the available support services until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the first steps I took, and it evolved into a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these options. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support networks available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming obstacles. This year has taught me that I’m never truly isolated and that finding joy amidst the stress of exams and deadlines is achievable.
As I contemplate the future, I feel thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and eager for what lies ahead. To anyone about to embark on a similar path: take the plunge, embrace your true self, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You’re more than capable!
