**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with feelings of nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I look back on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it was a transformative journey. So, what lessons have I taken away, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something weighing on your mind as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just days before classes began, I spent an entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I’ve formed some of the most significant friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve connected with here have come to feel like my second family, and it all stemmed from small, simple conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I learn? Taking that crucial first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not quite ready to jump in right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to mingle with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacy of the course material was yet another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more formidable. Doubting oneself becomes easy when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me was realizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to reach out for support may be the most crucial skill you cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and exhibit understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and addressed our concerns with diligence.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which provided me the chance to connect with staff members. This turned out to be a priceless experience. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, forming connections with your lecturers and tutors can significantly impact your journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems available—there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Insights Gained
This year has enlightened me that the apprehension I experienced—both before beginning university and throughout my time here—was often unfounded. With the abundance of support from staff and peers, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. More crucially, I’ve uncovered the ability to balance the strains of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and fulfillment.

Reflecting back, I can see the progress I’ve made since that anxious fresher who hesitated to step out of their room. University has been a voyage of self-discovery, and I’m eager to uncover what the next chapters will bring.
