**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and reserved, plunging into such an alien setting felt daunting. However, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a transformative experience—marked by personal development, obstacles, and lasting memories. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day in student housing, where I spent the time holed up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These companions have come to be like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university.

What enabled me to conquer that initial trepidation? It was through taking incremental steps—striking up conversations with others who were just as inexperienced and anxious as I was. I realized that taking that initial leap of faith early in the journey is vital. If you’re not ready to do so immediately, don’t fret—there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is key. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the rigorous academic expectations of university presented another major obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university coursework was demanding, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What guided me through this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, others likely are as well. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or the teaching staff. This emerged as perhaps the most significant lesson from my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
The faculty in the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about the success of their students and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our concerns and providing support.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral resources available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. At the start of the year, I became a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to establish connections with faculty members. This opportunity was invaluable, and I urge others to seize similar chances. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, becoming acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can greatly enhance your experience. My key takeaway? Don’t ever shy away from utilizing the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the fears I held—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—were largely unfounded. With the backing of staff, peers, and the wider university community, I was able to triumph over those apprehensions. This year has taught me that I’m not truly alone, and it’s feasible to balance academic demands with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I progress, I’m eager to discover what the next chapter of my university experience will bring. For anyone about to embark on their own journey, remember: take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed. You’ve got this!
