**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced a swirl of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a fresh-faced first-year student. For someone who had always been somewhat shy and introverted, plunging into such a monumental life shift felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year enriched with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a primary concern for you as well. On my first day settling into university housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds, cultivated both within my program and throughout the university, have become akin to a second family for me.

What aided me? Taking that essential first step. Initiating conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings was all it took. If you’re feeling uncertain or reluctant, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. The most critical lesson I learned is to always be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the demands and elevated complexity of university-level coursework posed another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to second-guess yourself when you observe others busy studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.

What carried me through those difficult times was the understanding that everyone else is navigating similar struggles. If you find yourself perplexed by something, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for support may be the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Benevolent Staff

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and demonstrate understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and were always available to address our issues.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier. At the beginning of the year, I embraced the opportunity to serve as a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff, proving to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gleaned from the Year

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced, both prior to and during my time at university, was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve acquired the ability to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.

To anyone embarking on their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those courageous steps, and remember that help is always at your fingertips.
