**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a blend of excitement, anxiety, and doubt regarding the future. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into this new phase felt intimidating. In hindsight, this year has been one of significant personal development, challenges, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Creating Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered upon starting university was the quest to make friends. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may relate to these feelings. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

Imperial has become like a second family to me, and it all began with brief conversations with fellow students who were just as anxious as I was. The most important lesson I gleaned? Take that leap of faith early. If you’re not quite prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic load and the heightened difficulty of the material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you see others immersed in study and wonder if you’re keeping pace.

What benefitted me the most was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are, too. The essential step is to ask for assistance—be it from peers or faculty. Learning to seek guidance is one of the most advantageous skills you can hone during your first year.

### Establishing Bonds with Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly desire students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and were consistently ready to address our issues.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with your lecturers and support staff can significantly impact your experience. My biggest revelation? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I have come to realize that many of the anxieties I felt—both before entering university and throughout the year—were unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support available from both faculty and peers, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage stress from examinations and deadlines alongside moments of joy and laughter.

As I look ahead, I feel increasingly confident and eager about what’s next. To anyone about to embark on their university journey: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is always within reach.
