**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now that I reflect on an educational year abundant with development, obstacles, and happiness, I comprehend how much this experience has reshaped me. So, what insights have I gathered, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was the quest to make connections. For many new students, this is often the most intimidating element of commencing university life. I vividly recall my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term starting officially. I spent the day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have morphed into my second family, both within my academic discipline and throughout the university. What contributed to this shift? It all began with taking small steps—sparking casual discussions with individuals who were equally new and hesitant as I was.
The most significant realization I had is that taking a bold step at the onset of the year is essential. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, that’s perfectly okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most critically, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable obstacle was acclimating to the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was challenging, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and seemingly thrive.
What aided me in maneuvering through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding a topic tough to grasp, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. The crucial point is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff. This is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors truly desire for students to achieve success and are compassionate about the hurdles we encounter. They uphold open communication with students throughout the year, addressing issues and offering assistance.
I didn’t fully exploit the available pastoral support until the conclusion of the year and regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can remarkably enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway here is to utilize all the support available—you can never have too much help!
### Fundamental Lessons from the Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often unwarranted. There is a wealth of support accessible, whether from faculty or fellow students, to assist you in navigating any obstacles. I’ve also realized that I’m never truly alone, and it’s feasible to harmonize academic demands with moments of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been a voyage of self-exploration, development, and connection. For anyone about to begin their own university journey, my message is straightforward: take that leap, embrace the support surrounding you, and don’t hesitate to be yourself.
