**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone with a quiet and reserved nature, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in development, hurdles, and enjoyment, I realize how much I’ve evolved and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. The commencement of university can be intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely one of your biggest worries. On my first day at the student residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present day, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have turned into a second family for me, both within my course and throughout the university. What was the secret? Taking that initial leap of faith. Engaging in small conversations with others in similar situations allowed me to break the ice.
So, what lesson did I glean? First, it’s beneficial to exit your comfort zone early on. If you’re not quite ready at first, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Second, embrace your true self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and perceive them to be ahead of you.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If something isn’t clear to you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it as well. The critical insight is to ask for assistance. This may have been the most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for support from your peers or the faculty.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff are genuinely invested in student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They foster open dialogue with students throughout the year, addressing concerns and offering guidance.
While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support system until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. Initially, I took a step of faith by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated relationship-building with staff members. This experience was invaluable, and I’d recommend that anyone seek ways to connect with their lecturers and support personnel. The assistance they provide exists for a purpose—make sure to take advantage of it.
### Reflections Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the dread I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There’s a wealth of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to aid you in navigating the challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never completely alone, and I’ve discovered how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and relaxation.
This year has been one of profound personal growth, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
