**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being inherently shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was an intimidating challenge. Now, as I reflect on this recent academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and countless moments of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate to these feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment came when I made the choice to step outside my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who felt just as new and unsure as I did. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into significant friendships, and I now view my friends at Imperial as a second family.

What did I take away from this situation? Firstly, it’s essential to take that initial step at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t think you’re ready, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Secondly, always remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who align with your personality.

### Addressing the Academic Difficulties

Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others study with assurance.

What aided me in this was understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department has been exceptional. They are genuinely invested in student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always available to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support provided until the year’s end, I wish I had tapped into those resources sooner. One of the smartest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest realization here is to make the most of the available resources and assistance—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the ample support from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of fun, and I’ve matured in ways I never anticipated.

To any incoming students reading this: welcome the adventure ahead. Take risks, ask for help when necessary, and above all, be yourself. University is a time for growth, and you’ll find your niche here just as I have.
