**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was set to embark on my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been more introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly within my comfort zone. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re reading this as a future student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I isolated myself in my room all day, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have come to feel like a second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings.
What have I derived from this? First, taking that first bold step at the year’s onset is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Second, simply being yourself is paramount. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heavy workload and the elevated difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence was sometimes challenging, particularly when I observed others studying and felt I was lagging behind.
What supported me during this time was the understanding that everyone else was in similar circumstances. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that my peers faced the same difficulties. The crucial takeaway here? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether from friends or educators, reaching out for assistance is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
When discussing support, I must highlight how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They earnestly desire student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication and were always ready to address our concerns.
Though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I wish I had started sooner. One of my best choices was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to develop rapport with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My overarching message? Utilize the resources and support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, it has imparted valuable lessons. Those anxious feelings I experienced—both prior to entering university and during the year—were often unfounded and could be alleviated by the abundant support from staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to harmonize the stress from exams and deadlines with joyful and enjoyable moments.
As I continue onward, I’m thankful for the trials I’ve encountered and the growth they’ve fostered. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my recommendation is straightforward: take the leap, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You can do this!
