**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect upon an academic year filled with growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can’t help but think about the lessons learned and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a potential student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have evolved into a second family for me, both within my course and throughout the university.

So, what have I discovered? Taking that first step is crucial. Even if you may not feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who share your interests and values.

### Facing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level material was yet another major challenge. The difference between A-levels and university was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your abilities when you observe your peers studying and wonder if you’re doing enough.

What supported me most was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—either from fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most essential skill you can acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel truly want students to flourish and exhibit understanding towards the challenges we encounter. They keep consistent communication with us throughout the year and are always receptive to our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Early on, I made a bold decision to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Whether through official roles or informal interactions, establishing relationships with your lecturers and support personnel can significantly influence your experience. My most significant lesson? Utilize the resources and support offered to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during the year—was often misplaced. Thanks to the extensive support options available, both from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself and maximizing my university journey.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. Embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that help is always accessible.
