**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into such a novel and challenging environment felt intimidating. However, reflecting on the year now, I realize it was a period rich with personal development, obstacles, and a good deal of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was the challenge of meeting new people. If you’re a future student, this is likely one of your main concerns as well. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a supportive community, both in my program and throughout the university. All it took was some light conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings. My suggestion? Take a risk early on. If you’re not prepared to jump right in, don’t worry—numerous icebreaker events and interactions will surfaces. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your competence when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.
What benefitted me the most was bearing in mind that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a topic, it’s likely that others are as well. The most crucial thing is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help might be the most beneficial skill you can hone in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely want students to achieve success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and demonstrated compassion towards our difficulties.
While I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had connected earlier. Accepting the position of a year well-being representative early on was one positive step I did take. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting to know the staff is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have an excess of help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve accrued a wealth of knowledge. The anxious feelings I experienced prior to starting university—and throughout the year—were frequently baseless. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never entirely on my own.
Above all, I’ve learned how to reconcile the stress from exams and deadlines with bursts of enjoyment and excitement. University serves as a platform for development, and while challenges are a given, so too are chances to flourish.
If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, remember: take that plunge, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
