**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and a sense of the unknown regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year, I recognize a period rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the university’s onset was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day in student housing, just before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships of my life during my time at Imperial.

What prompted this shift? It began with small actions—engaging in light chit-chat with fellow newcomers who were just as apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these exchanges developed into substantial friendships, and I discovered a second family among my contemporaries.

So, what’s the takeaway? Take that initial leap of faith. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. And most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university represented another considerable challenge. The volume and complexity of the coursework were markedly more demanding than A-levels, and the jump from the first term to the second felt particularly intense. It’s simple to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you are lagging.

What aided me during this adjustment was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—be it from peers or faculty members. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your initial year.

### Guidance from Staff and Pastoral Support

A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science faculty. They authentically desire students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were ever ready to address our issues.

Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for the year was one of the early actions I took, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It helped me forge solid connections with staff members, which proved invaluable.

If there’s one piece of guidance I would offer, it’s to fully utilize the support that is available to you. Whether pertaining to academic assistance or pastoral help, don’t shy away from reaching out. You can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Looking back at my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and self-discovery.

As I progress, I am thankful for the growth I have undergone and the relationships I have cultivated. To anyone about to begin their university journey: face the challenges head-on, take those bold steps, and remember—you are not alone.
