**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and doubts about what the future would bring. I was on the brink of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introspective, venturing into this new territory was daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences, I can assert that it was all worthwhile. But what have I learned during this year, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making connections. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my opening day in student housing, just days ahead of the academic term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These bonds didn’t materialize instantly, but they began with simple actions—like initiating conversations with fellow peers who were experiencing similar feelings. I’ve established a supportive community here at Imperial, and it all commenced with that initial step. My foremost lesson? Embrace your true self. With such a varied community at university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your passions and principles. And if you’re not prepared to jump in straight away, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to engage with others throughout the year.
### Managing the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic expectations of university was yet another challenge I needed to tackle. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you see your peers thriving.
What benefited me the most was understanding that I wasn’t the only one. Everyone has their struggles, and odds are, if you’re having a tough time, others are as well. The essential thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most beneficial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Division
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are sympathetic to our struggles. Throughout the year, they kept up open lines of communication with us and offered numerous resources to help us navigate any challenges.
While I didn’t completely utilize the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the finest choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is something I highly endorse. They are there to assist, and there’s never too much support to have.
### Takeaways
Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has shown me how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fulfillment.
In summary, my first year at Imperial has been an expedition of development, connection, and enlightenment. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university journey, recognize that challenges will arise, but so will chances for growth. Take that step, seek assistance, and above all, be authentic—you will discover your belonging.
