**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new experience felt overwhelmingly daunting. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Making Connections: Conquering the Initial Challenge
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. For many, this marks a significant source of anxiety when beginning university, and if you happen to be a prospective student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On the first day of settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So what did this teach me? The essential lesson is to take that first step at the beginning of the academic year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Surmounting the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-level studies, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an intense environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others diligently studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.
What helped me navigate these tough moments was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are facing the same difficulties. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, don’t shy away from reaching out.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in regular contact with us, addressing our issues and providing insights. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s onset, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my group. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more significantly, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff members, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to seize these opportunities. The key takeaway from this experience is to fully capitalize on the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Final Reflections: Welcoming the Experience
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from both staff and peers, I’ve realized that I am never alone. More importantly, I have learned to balance having fun with managing the inevitable stress linked to exams and deadlines.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey, characterized by personal development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. If you are on the verge of commencing your own university adventure, don’t forget to take those bold steps, seek help, and above all, be genuine.
