**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into this new phase of life felt daunting. However, as I reflect on a year of academic growth, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it has been a life-changing period. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, you may resonate with the same feelings. On my first day in student housing, mere days before the commencement of the term, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to report that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who comprehend and back me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort boundaries and striking up casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive. My key takeaway? Take that plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with fellow students. Remember, the best version of yourself is your authentic self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to meet people who align with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic challenges of university was another major obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What assisted me in tackling these challenges was the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are encountering the same difficulties. The vital step is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are empathetic to the obstacles we encounter. They maintain transparent communication throughout the year and are always available to address our queries.
I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated connections with staff members. This role was invaluable, as it enlightened me about the available support systems and made me feel more incorporated into the department. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize every available resource and support system—you can never have excessive help!
### Knowledge Gained
As I ponder over this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I held before commencing university were unfounded. Thanks to the encouragement of staff and fellow students, those anxious feelings became manageable. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, even during challenging periods such as exams and deadlines. Most crucially, I’ve learned how to synchronize academic responsibilities with enjoyment, enriching my university journey.
This inaugural year has been a path of self-discovery, development, and forging connections. To anyone preparing to begin their university journey: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and don’t hesitate to take that plunge.
