**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path before me. I was set to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on that time, I recognize an academic year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For many new students, this can be one of the most overwhelming parts of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may also be a concern of yours. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family here at Imperial. It all commenced with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar situations.
So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities available to help you connect with others. Most importantly, I realized that being true to yourself is crucial. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to find people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another obstacle I faced was adapting to the demanding workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others and feeling inadequate.
What assisted me during those times was acknowledging that everyone else was confronting similar challenges. If I struggled to comprehend something, it was likely that others did too. The most significant lesson I acquired during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or the faculty, reaching out can substantially impact your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support team are genuinely invested in students’ success and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with students throughout the academic year and are always ready to lend a helping hand.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the year’s beginning, I decided to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly valuable. There are myriad ways to engage with staff, and doing so is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are numerous support systems in place, from staff to fellow peers, that aid in navigating these challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s entirely feasible to relish university life even while handling the demands of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a voyage of personal development, resilience, and exploration. If you’re on the verge of starting your own university journey, my message is straightforward: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ll be astounded at the extent you can achieve.
