**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I got ready to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Taking such a significant step into the unfamiliar was a challenging prospect for someone like myself, who has always been introverted and reserved. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the initial and most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous newcomers, this is one of the most intimidating parts of starting university, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too anxious to step outside and meet others.

Now, looking back, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships in my life. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with individuals who were in a similar situation.

What did I glean from this experience? First and foremost, it’s definitely worth taking that initial leap at the year’s onset. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and ways to connect with others. Secondly, the most vital thing you can do is to be yourself. With the diverse community across the university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another substantial challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was quite noticeable, and the change from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when witnessing classmates studying and worrying that you might be lagging behind.

What supported me the most was the reminder that everyone was navigating through similar experiences. If I was struggling to grasp something, it was likely that others were too. The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether reaching out to your classmates or instructors, asking for help is a crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been truly remarkable. They genuinely care about our success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to listen to our concerns.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had recognized its importance earlier. Early on, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for the year, which helped me forge strong connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and I highly suggest doing so—it’s amongst the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway is to fully leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. The anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted and could have been alleviated by the abundant support accessible from both staff and peers. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines while enjoying moments of joy and laughter.

In conclusion, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a life-changing experience. It has been a year filled with personal development, new friendships, and significant lessons. If you are about to embark on your own university journey, take that leap, embrace the challenges ahead, and remember—you’ve got this!
