**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I perceive a journey of personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Connections

One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, feeling too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can say with conviction that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who resemble a second family.

What made the change? It all began with casual conversations. I recognized that many others shared my emotions, feeling just as apprehensive and uncertain. Taking that bold step to initiate a dialogue was the first crucial move. If you’re not prepared to plunge in right away, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. The primary lesson I took away is to be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll inevitably discover individuals who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened difficulty of the material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more drastic. It’s simple to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to thrive.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, the likelihood was that others were encountering the same difficulties. The most vital skill I honed during my first year was learning to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or the academic staff, reaching out can significantly alter your experience.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize how remarkable the Materials department team is. They truly wish for students to succeed and are compassionate towards the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld transparent communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support.

Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I regret not taking advantage of it earlier. Early on, I ventured out by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can profoundly enrich your university experience. My most critical takeaway is to utilize the support systems accessible—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this, the year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during my time here—was frequently misplaced. With the abundance of support from both faculty and peers, I discovered that I was never genuinely isolated. Most importantly, I learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines with instances of fun and enjoyment.

As I progress, I am thankful for the growth and experiences I’ve gained this past year. To anyone on the verge of commencing their own university adventure, understand that the challenges you encounter will be formative, and the support surrounding you will empower you to flourish.
