**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase of life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and ample happiness, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the challenge of meeting new people. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, you might resonate with these feelings. On my first day in student accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Jump ahead to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve cultivated some of the most rewarding friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment occurred when I opted to take small actions—spark casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same apprehensions. Gradually, these exchanges flourished into significant bonds, and I now feel as though I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. The essential takeaway? Make that initial leap. If you’re not ready instantly, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new faces. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at university, you’re certain to find individuals who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was quite evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. At times, it was simple to feel inundated and question my abilities, especially when I compared myself to others.
What aided me in maneuvering through this was understanding that everyone else was grappling with similar trials. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were in the same situation. The most significant lesson I gleaned was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s a vital skill that can prove essential in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
A standout feature of my experience has been the exceptional assistance from the Materials department staff. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are compassionate regarding the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was a leap of faith, but that turned out to be one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual exchanges, getting to know the staff is something I strongly advise. Utilize the support systems in place—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Main Takeaways
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often unmerited. There are numerous support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, ready to help you navigate the obstacles. This year has shown me that I’m never completely alone and that I can balance pressures like exams and deadlines with experiences of joy and achievement.
As I gaze forward, I’m eager to keep growing, learning, and maximizing my time at Imperial. If you’re on the brink of starting your university adventure, remember to take those leaps, welcome the support around you, and relish the journey!
