**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future would bring. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quite shy and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and remarkable experiences, I can assert that it’s been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re a future student going through this, you might feel the same apprehension. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Flash forward to now, and I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I could have imagined—friends who feel like a second family.
What facilitated this journey? It began with casual conversations and connecting with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. The greatest lesson I learned was to take that initial step of faith early on. If you’re not ready to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there will be lots of icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Facing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and challenges was another significant obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and succeeding.
What helped me through those moments of self-doubt was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If a concept eludes you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The solution lies in seeking assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to reach out for help is, in my view, the most vital skill to hone in your first year.
### The Helpful Staff in Materials
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we confront. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and provided unwavering support.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it became a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether via official roles or informal interactions, becoming acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. My key insight? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unjustified. With a wealth of support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly solitary. I’ve learned how to manage exam and deadline-related stress alongside moments of joy and fun.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize how much I’ve developed, not just academically but also personally. Beginning university may feel intimidating, but with the right attitude and support, it can turn into one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
