**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was about to set off on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat reserved and introverted, plunging into the unfamiliar felt like a formidable task. Now that I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, fresh obstacles, and myriad unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxieties of Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate to those feelings. On my initial day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the entire time tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve had. These connections have become my supportive family here at Imperial, all stemming from casual conversations with individuals who were equally apprehensive.

What lesson did I glean? Taking that first courageous step at the beginning of the year is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, fret not—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your vibe.

### Addressing the Academic Trials

Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material was yet another considerable obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and thriving.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself battling to grasp a concept, there’s a strong chance others are too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching personnel. Learning to ask for help was perhaps the most significant takeaway from my first year.

### The Wonderful Staff

Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are compassionate towards the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are consistently available to respond to our queries.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support that was available until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I made at the start of the year, which turned out to be a fantastic choice. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty members that proved to be invaluable.

If I could offer a single piece of advice, it would be to make the most of the support provided to you. Whether it’s academic assistance or pastoral support, you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during my time at university—was largely unfounded. With the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone to lean on. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly on my own and that enjoying university life amidst the rigors of exams and deadlines is indeed possible.

This year has been an adventure of growth, challenges, and happiness, and I’m eager to discover what the future has in store as I proceed with my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
