**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was awash with nerves, trepidation, and ambivalence regarding the path ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and ample enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Embracing the Journey: Forming Connections
One of the greatest obstacles I encountered early in the year was forging friendships. The onset of university can be daunting, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, you might resonate with those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. My classmates have evolved into a second family, and it all began with casual conversations and shared moments.

What I’ve realized is that taking a leap of faith at the onset is essential. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re destined to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level work was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others around you seemingly flourishing.

The solution to this is to bear in mind that you’re not alone. Everyone is grappling with similar challenges, and chances are, if you’re facing difficulties, others are too. Don’t hold back from seeking assistance—whether from your peers or faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered various forms of support.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the department’s welfare resources until later in the year, I wish I had recognized their value sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was one of the early steps I took, and it enabled me to establish connections with staff members. Building relationships with the staff is priceless, and there are myriad ways to do so. My most significant takeaway here is to fully utilize the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
This year has imparted valuable lessons on maneuvering through university life. I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting and throughout the year—was often baseless and could be mitigated by the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated in my challenges and that it’s feasible to harmonize the stress induced by exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Looking back, I take pride in my growth and am eager for what lies ahead. To anyone embarking on their university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, seek help, and relish the experience.
