**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into such an unknown setting felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, far too frightened to venture out and meet others.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say that I have made some of the most incredible friends of my life. My time at Imperial has provided me with a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were similarly situated.

So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is undoubtedly beneficial. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine—there are abundant icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened difficulty of university-level material was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What sustained me during these times was the understanding that I was not in this alone. Everyone was facing the same hurdles, and if I was confused by something, chances are others were too. The crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. Whether from peers or teaching staff, seeking support is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department have been phenomenal. They genuinely aspire for students to excel and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they engaged in open dialogue with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. Initially, I took a risk by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong bonds with staff members. This experience was invaluable, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can significantly impact your experience. My most important lesson? Never hesitate to utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that a lot of the anxiety I experienced beforehand and during university was unfounded. Numerous support systems are available, from staff to fellow students, to help you tackle challenges. This year has demonstrated that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I progress, I feel sincerely thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve built. To anyone on the brink of beginning their university adventure: embrace the apprehension, take those risks, and remember that support is always within reach.
