**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, a whirlwind of nerves, fear, and uncertainty enveloped me as I prepared for the journey ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt particularly daunting. Fast forward to now, as I reflect on the academic year, I recognize it as a time marked by significant personal growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gathered, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was the prospect of making friends. This concern is common among many new students, and I was certainly no exception. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly proclaim that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have become like a second family to me, both within my course and throughout the university.
What have I garnered from this journey? First and foremost, taking that first step to connect with others is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Secondly, the best course of action is to be authentic. With such a vibrant and diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Maneuvering Academic Trials
Adapting to the academic rigor of university presented yet another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level material was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was particularly demanding. It’s simple to feel self-doubt when surrounded by high-achieving classmates, but I discovered a crucial truth: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are facing the same hurdle. The answer lies in seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, one of the most rewarding aspects of my first year has been the exceptional support from the Materials department. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to forge valuable connections with faculty members. This opportunity proved to be immensely beneficial. Engaging with the staff—whether through formal roles or casual interactions—is one of the best steps you can take for your personal growth. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources and support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored—both before and during university—were baseless. With the encouragement of friends, staff, and the broader Imperial community, I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated. I’ve also learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and relaxation.
This year has been a transformative experience, teaching me to embrace obstacles, seek help when necessary, and relish the journey.
