**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overcome with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, taking the plunge into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year filled with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize how much I’ve progressed and what I’ve learned.

### Forming Friendships: Taking the Plunge
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the process of making friends. Beginning university can seem overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling the same apprehension. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The people I’ve encountered here feel like a second family, and it simply required me to step outside my comfort zone and initiate small talks with others who were experiencing the same feelings.

So, what have I taken away from this? I’ve learned that making that first move at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared or hesitant, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with fellow students. Above all, just be genuine. With such a diverse crowd across the course and the university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heavier workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt your abilities when witnessing others study and question if you’re putting in enough effort.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar difficulties. If you’re grappling with certain concepts, it’s likely that others are too. The essential takeaway is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. This may be the most important lesson I gained in my first year: don’t shy away from seeking support.

### Assistance from Staff: A Significant Advantage
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department are truly exceptional. They earnestly wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open channels of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s commencement, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which ultimately proved invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can truly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support provided to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
In hindsight, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. The anxiety I experienced before embarking on my university journey, and even throughout the year, often turned out to be unfounded. With the immense support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

I’ve acquired the ability to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, I’ve evolved as an individual, stepping outside my comfort zone and welcoming the opportunities that arose.

To anyone gearing up to commence their university adventure: take the plunge, seek assistance, and remember to savor the experience.
