**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new chapter felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself now?

One of the earliest and most daunting obstacles I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern of yours as well. On my first day at my accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life, both within my program and at the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with a few straightforward conversations with others who were feeling the same way as I was.

So, what insights did I gain? I discovered that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities specifically designed to facilitate connections with others. Most crucially, I came to understand that being authentic is essential. With such a wide variety of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into this setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. However, one thing that supported me was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something isn’t clear, I can nearly guarantee that others are grappling with it too. So, seek help. This is arguably the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year – don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and faculty for assistance.

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in Materials Science are outstanding. They truly want you to flourish and understand the struggles students endure. They sympathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support system available until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the start of the year, I took initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with the staff, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with the faculty, and doing so is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself. My most significant takeaway is to leverage the support available to you – you can never receive too much help!

In general, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often misplaced. With the extensive support network from both staff and fellow students, those feelings can be alleviated. I’ve learned that I’m never alone in this journey, and I’ve managed to find joy amid the inevitable stress of exams and deadlines.
